Kirill Kaprizov scores twice but Jets down Wild 5-2
Published in Hockey
In what turned out to be a showdown between two top lines, the Winnipeg Jets’ best players upstaged the Minnesota Wild’s.
Kirill Kaprizov scored twice, but Winnipeg’s leaders had double that output to down the Wild 5-2 on Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre for the Wild’s most lopsided loss of the season.
Cole Perfetti had a pair of goals, including the game-winner on the power play in the second period after Kaprizov’s second tying goal. But it was Kyle Connor’s finish in the third that stung the Wild (4-2-1) before Cole Koepke tacked on a fifth goal. Not only were the Wild finishing a back-to-back against a rested Winnipeg lineup, but they lost another player to injury.
Captain Jared Spurgeon (upper body) did not play, and the Wild were also without Nico Sturm after he took a puck to the head in Monday’s 4-2 win over Vegas and was taken to hospital.
Sturm will miss some time, but he did not suffer a skull fracture like Brock Faber did when he was struck in the head with a shot during the preseason. Marcus and Nick Foligno are also on injured reserve.
This was Kaprizov’s third multi-goal game of the season, and his eight goals lead the NHL.
His first against the Jets was his most impressive of the bunch, with Kaprizov batting in his own rebound after a Perfetti deflection opened the scoring. Then after a put-back by Mark Scheifele late in the first, Kaprizov tipped in a Quinn Hughes shot 48 seconds later. The assist extended Hughes’ season-opening point streak to seven games.
Goalie Calvin Pickard, in his Wild debut, made 20 saves.
