CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Taylor Moton is staying in Charlotte for the long haul.

Moton agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers on Friday, the team announced. The new deal is worth $44 million, with $40 million in guaranteed money, a league source confirmed to The Charlotte Observer.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the first to report the deal.

Moton was set to play on the final year of his contract this season with a $14.3 million base salary. However, due to multiple restructures over the years, Moton’s cap number was $31.3 million. Moton’s new deal should lower that cap number significantly, regardless of the way the deal is structured.

“It’s such a great moment for us,” head coach Dave Canales said Friday. “(Moton) has been a stud here for a really long time. And has continued to show us the progress, the reliability that we’re looking for, the attitude. The character of the guy first and foremost speaks to who he is. And just wanting him to be here, to be a part of what we’re building, and knowing that he’s an important part of our offense.”

The 31-year-old right tackle has played his entire career with the Panthers. He has started 113 of the 129 games that he’s appeared in during his eight-year tenure.

The 2017 second-round pick is the longest-tenured offensive player on the roster.

Last month, Moton was emotional discussing his lack of a clear future with the organization. He noted the importance of the team and area to his family and his career.

“I try not to think about it,” Moton said about his then-unsettled future in July. “I’ve had some of my best years here in Carolina. I know we haven’t won, but the city, and being a Panther, means a lot to me.

“It’s crazy — you don’t know — obviously, I want the years to continue. But if it’s my last year here, I want it to be my best year. I want it to be the offensive line’s best year, the offensive unit’s best year. The team’s best year — do whatever I can to help us be our best yet. I’m a little emotional about it.”

Now, though, Moton has long-term security.

He will be under contract through the 2027 regular season, giving the Panthers a long-term plan at the position. Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is under contract through the 2026 season, as he had his fifth-year option picked up in April.

With Moton locked up, four of the team’s five starting linemen are signed through next season. Starting center Austin Corbett, who won the job this month, is on a one-year deal.
