SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Trey Mancini is going out on his own terms: as an Oriole.

The recently retired first baseman/outfielder will sign a one-day contract with the team Sept. 19 to officially conclude his playing career, the team announced Friday afternoon. The Orioles will host pregame festivities on the field to recognize Mancini ahead of their 4:05 p.m. contest against the Milwaukee Brewers and offer a special ticket package for the game that includes a hat with the “F16HT” logo.

Mancini, 34, announced his retirement from professional baseball Aug. 18 after completing his MLB comeback with the Los Angeles Angels, playing five games for the club three years removed from his last appearance in the majors.

The Orioles’ 2013 eighth-round pick played in parts of six seasons for Baltimore, including 2021, when he won American League Comeback Player of the Year for overcoming Stage 3 colon cancer. Mancini missed the entire 2020 campaign while undergoing chemotherapy treatments, but he ultimately made it back in time for opening day the following year and slugged 21 home runs.

For his career, Mancini hit .263 with 129 homers and a .774 OPS in 836 games across eight seasons for the Orioles, Angels, Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs. He won a World Series ring with Houston after the Orioles traded him in 2022 and signed a two-year, $14 million deal with the Cubs the following offseason, only to be released by August of his first season.

Thus began a three-year effort to make it back to the majors, culminating with the Angels calling him up in July. Mancini recorded three hits in his Angels debut, his first MLB appearance in 1,043 days.

Mancini will receive a hero’s welcome in Baltimore, where he will throw out the first pitch and be recognized by a contingent of former teammates, coaches, staff members and medical professionals.

The F16HT sign that has been displayed in the Orioles’ home dugout tunnel since 2020 will also be moved to the Camden Yards club level archives, and a new, permanent sign will take its place in the dugout.

A portion of the proceeds from the Orioles’ ticket package for the Sept. 19 game will go to the Trey Mancini Foundation, which works to support those facing food insecurity, illness and hardships. Mancini will also participate in a kids-only autograph session behind Section 16 before the game.
