Justin Verlander goes on injured list for Tigers
Published in Baseball
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers, before Saturday's game, announced that Justin Verlander will be placed on the 15-day IL with left hip inflammation. The move will be retroactive to April 1.
Verlander was scheduled to start the game Sunday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander Keider Montero is expected to be called up from Triple-A Toledo and make that start.
Manager AJ Hinch is expected to discuss the injury after the game Saturday, but he started feeling discomfort in his hip on Friday. He threw on Saturday to test it, and that's when the decision was made to put him on the IL.
Verlander made one start for the Tigers, in Detroit's 9-6 loss at Arizona on Monday night. He gave up six hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, with one strikeout and two walks.
