Yankees make another mental error in lifeless loss to Marlins

A day after suffering their worst loss of the season, the New York Yankees went down without much of a fight.

Eury Perez and the Miami Marlins pitchers had their way with the Yankees as they were shut out in a 2-0 loss to lose the three-game set. Perez tossed six innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. The Bombers had no answer for the Marlins‘ ace and certainly didn’t have one for their bullpen.

The two hits the Yanks collected off Perez — a double from Ben Rice and a single by Giancarlo Stanton — would be their only hits of the game. Ronny Henriquez, Tyler Phillips and Calvin Faucher shut down Aaron Boone’s offense in a convincing and lifeless fashion. The Yankees went down 14 in a row after Paul Goldschmidt’s fifth-inning walk.

There was also another inexcusable error on the bases — which has become a common theme for this Bomber squad. In the bottom of the second, Paul Goldschmidt popped up to second base with one out and Jazz Chisholm Jr. on first. Chisholm was caught sleeping and doubled up at first on a ball that didnt leave the infield.

The bright spot for the Yankees was rookie starting pitcher Cam Schlittler. The hard-throwing right-hander churned out his best outing of his young career as he recorded five innings allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Agustin Ramirez was the only offense necessary for the Marlins as his two solo homers were responsible for the only runs of the game.

Jake Bird also got some redemption after his nightmarish team debut on Friday — four earned runs in 1/3 innings pitched. Bird tossed a perfect sixth inning striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The Yankees will attempt to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. ET. Luis Gil will make his season debut as the right-hander has yet to appear due to a right lat strain suffered in spring training. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year will be making his first appearance on the mound since Game 4 of the 2024 World Series. Edward Cabrera will take the ball for the Marlins looking to secure the sweep.
