MIAMI — Lionel Messi will have another big-time striker alongside him as Inter Miami begins defense of its MLS Cup title in less than a month.

After weeks of negotiations, the club announced Friday that it signed Mexican national team forward German Berterame from Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey with a transfer fee reported to be $15 million.

The 27-year-old Mexican international, who was born in Argentina, is under contract through the 2028-29 season with an option for 2029-30. He will occupy the club’s third designated player spot, joining Messi and midfielder Rodrigo De Paul.

Berterame contributed 68 goals and 15 assists in 153 appearances for Monterrey. He previously played for Atlético de San Luis in Liga MX, as well as Patronato and San Lorenzo in Argentina.

On the international stage, he has scored two goals in eight appearances for Mexico and will compete for a 2026 World Cup roster spot. He scored the lone goal for Mexico last week in a 1-0 win over Bolivia.

“I want to tell everyone that I’m very happy to be part of the Inter Miami family,” a smiling Berterame said on a video released by the club. “I’m very excited and proud to wear this jersey and to bring many great moments to all the fans. I hope to see you all there soon. Sending you a big hug.”

He is awaiting visa papers, and it is unknown if he will accompany the team to Colombia for Saturday’s preseason game against Atletico Nacional in Medellin.

According to media outlets in Spain and Mexico, 70% of Berterame’s player card belongs to the Monterrey Rayados, while the Atletico de Madrid Group (due to the player’s past at Atletico San Luis) owns 30%.

With his signing, Inter Miami gets a proven scorer who will add firepower to an attack that includes Messi, Tadeo Allende, Mateo Silvetti, Telasco Segovia, and 39-year-old Uruguayan legend Luis Suarez, who signed a contract for a final season.

Born in Argentina and later naturalized as a Mexican international, Berterame began his professional career in the youth ranks of San Lorenzo, where he made his first-team debut at 17 years old in a Copa Libertadores match in 2016. In 2019, he went out on a season-long loan to second-tier side Patronato, registering four goals and one assist in 12 appearances.

Later that same year, Berterame made the move to Liga MX with Atlético de San Luis, where he quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dangerous attacking threats. Across four campaigns with the club, he tallied 31 goals and six assists in 93 matches, highlighted by earning Liga MX top scorer honors with nine goals during the 2022 Apertura tournament.

His standout performances earned him a transfer to Mexican giants CF Monterrey in 2022. During the course of four seasons with Los Rayados, Berterame continued to showcase his consistency and finishing ability across all competitions, including Liga MX, FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, and Leagues Cup.

In all, he has scored 105 goals at club level.

On the international stage, Berterame represented his native Argentina at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. In 2024, the forward completed his naturalization process and became eligible to represent the Mexican national team.

Berterame is the latest signing for Inter Miami, which has added several new players to bolster the roster. Other newcomers include MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and Canadian national team keeper Dayne St. Clair, Argentine midfielder David Ayala and defenders Sergio Reguilón of Spain, Facundo Mura of Argentina and Micael of Brazil.

The team is in the middle of a four-country preseason tour, which began last weekend with a 3-0 loss to Alianza Lima in Peru. After the game in Colombia, Inter Miami will play its third preseason match Feb. 7 in Ecuador against Barcelona de Guayaquil and then will travel to Puerto Rico for a Feb. 13 game against Ecuadorian LigaPro Serie A champion, Independiente del Valle

Inter Miami opens the 2026 season with a Feb. 21 road game against LAFC at the Los Angeles Coliseum (9:30 pm, Apple TV). It will play its first five games on the road as construction is completed on their new stadium, Miami Freedom Park. The first game in the new venue is April 4 against Austin FC (7:30 pm, Apple TV).
