Angela Gonzales-Torres, backed by DSA, wins election to California's 34th District

LOS ANGELES — Voters have chosen Angela Gonzales-Torres, a 31-year-old from Highland Park who was backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, over incumbent Rep. Jimmy Gomez, an Eagle Rock Democrat, in the race for Congressional District 34, according to The Associated Press.
The district spans significant sections of Los Angeles, including Boyle Heights, Chinatown, downtown, Eagle Rock, Lincoln Park, Little Tokyo, Pico-Union and Westlake.
Gonzales-Torres’ win marks a major career leap. She recently held two part-time jobs: one at an affordable housing project for seniors and another as an academic counselor at a college.
She was supported by the DSA, Justice Democrats and other progressive groups, but also faced sharp criticism over her leadership on the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council — with board members accusing her of picking fights and failing to shepherd through board priorities.
Overshadowing the race was a House Ethics Committee investigation into Gomez over his alleged inappropriate sexual contact with a staffer.
Gomez, 51, denied any legal or ethical wrongdoing but admitted to making mistakes outside of his marriage.
Gomez was first elected to Congress in 2017 and had successfully fended off challenges from progressives in past cycles.
