Joe Biden's routine physical exam turns up 'small nodule' on prostate

Former President Joe Biden’s regular medical evaluation earlier this month turned up a “small nodule” on his prostate that required he undergo “further evaluation,” according to his spokesperson.

Biden spent Friday night at a hospital in Philadelphia after doctors spotted the nodule during his “routine physical exam” last week, The New York Times reported.

The presence of a “small nodule” can suggest any range of things. A Biden spokesperson told ABC News it’s too early to say whether it’s a benign lump caused by inflammation or a more serious matter. The spokesperson did not provide further details, declining to elaborate on any additional aspects of his care.

Biden exited the Oval Office in January as the oldest serving commander in chief in United States history. At 82 years old, it would not be uncommon for him or any man his age to suffer from prostate issues, including more common conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis and prostate cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control’s most recent data, 236,659 new cases of prostate cancer were reported in the U.S. in 2021, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men that year.

“The older a man is, the greater the chance of getting prostate cancer,” the CDC noted.

Biden spent much of his presidency plagued by concerns about his advanced age in addition to questions regarding his physical and mental fitness, and whether he was able to effectively serve.

In February 2023, while in office, Biden had a lesion removed from his chest that was cancerous. And before the start of his presidency, Biden had several non-melanoma skin cancers removed via Mohs surgery.

What’s more, rumors he’d been suffering cognitive decline — fueled in part by mumbled interview answers and the subsequent internet memes — served as constant background for much of his last months in office. They reached a fever-pitch as he angled to reclaim the White House, and ultimately upended his 2024 presidential campaign against Republican rival Donald Trump.

With just four months left before the election, Biden exited the race in July and endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris to run in his stead, though she eventually lost to Trump in November.

As recently as earlier this month, Biden denied suffering cognitive decline while he served in the White House, vehemently pushing back on reports suggesting he was mentally unfit.

“They are wrong. There is nothing to sustain that,” Biden said during an appearance on “The View.”

Former first lady Jill Biden echoed the sentiment, adding many of the claims are coming from people who were “not in the White House with us.”

“They didn’t see how hard Joe worked every single day,” she said. “I mean, it was nonstop.”
