Are the young generations living in fear of the future?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Popular Mechanics recently covered a story claiming that humans will one day become a mixture of humanity and machines. I think there should be a stopgap on the progression of technology; we may annihilate ourselves. I think the young generations are the first to see such a terrible storm brewing, and it is causing them to live in fear of the future. – H.M.

A: As the clock ticked closer to the end of the 20 th century, the world seemed to be spinning faster and faster. Technology and time were racing past us at dizzying speeds. Is there still hope for us – or is it as bad as we often fear?

The image of an approaching storm still captures this sense of fear and uncertainty. In the midst of every kind of political struggle, a storm of resentment and insecurity already resides in the hearts of many people. There is a tempest of rage.

Young people often are cheated and exploited, sometimes by educators and sociologists who have stripped them of moral values, family relationships, and the sense of a greater purpose in life. One newspaper called the first decade of the 21 st century “The Decade of Dread.” Millions are filled with confusion and fear as they look to the future.

Storm warnings surround us no matter which way we turn. The generation that lived through the Great Depression knew hard times. The baby boomer generation didn’t experience the same hardship, nor did their children, but they are seeing the effects of a demoralized society, ignoring what the Old Testament records: that “there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9, NKJV).

It’s time for people to look to God, who is the great Creator, and He is also the Peace-Giver who can calm anxious hearts. There is hope for all who will peer into the Scriptures and seek God’s truth about how to live in the midst of life’s uncertainties.
