The Price of Respect

Holiday Mathis on

It is said that respect is one of the few gifts that cost nothing to give. But if that were true, more people would give it easily. Sometimes respect costs pride, and pride can be expensive indeed, maybe even invaluable. Under the Scorpio Moon's square to Mars, we find out who people are by the quality of respect they give even when it costs them a bit of ego to give it.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You can disagree without turning the other person into an opponent. Another person's good idea takes nothing from your own. You recognize contributions with merit, and give them full credit because the strength of an idea is more important than winning.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Certainty feels good, especially when you have excellent reasons for believing what you believe. But you also acknowledge the experience of others who have lived through things you haven't. The experience may have brought them to a different conclusion.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You see the flaw in someone's argument and know exactly how to expose it. But what would be the point? There's greater power in understanding the parts that work. So you let the easy comeback go and give the worthwhile idea your attention.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Another person's decision may have little to do with you, even when it affects you. No need to assign yourself a starring role in other people's process. It usually doesn't work anyway. People do what they want. They have their reasons.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). When someone else deserves the applause, attention, credit or authority today, you just let them have it. Maybe it's your area of expertise, and that doesn't matter now. You're confident and gracious enough to give them their full moment.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You may know a better method and still let another competent adult handle things differently. Give them room to use their own judgment. There's an important distinction between an actual mistake and a choice you wouldn't have made.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Solidarity feels good, and when you disagree? Well, that's a gift too. The sharing of ideas lends more depth to your thinking and feeling like you understand the world better is fulfilling. You'll harmonize even when you don't agree.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Information, emotional insight or another person's vulnerability gives you an advantage. What you do with the upper hand says plenty about you. Knowing where someone is tender gives you an opportunity to protect that spot rather than press it.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You may have something true to say, but you don't just say it any way you please. You give another person's dignity as much consideration as the facts. The message matters, and so does its delivery.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Experience, accomplishment, money, age or authority create differences in power. You don't pretend all positions are identical. Someone may have more or less status, but all are equal human beings. The way you handle rank reveals more than rank itself.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). One person sees the larger pattern. Another has personal experience. A life lived on the ground contains information that even the finest theories can miss. But we also need the theories. The ideal is a melding of perspectives.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Empathy can make you confident in your reading of another person, but there's still a lot you don't know and wouldn't assume to. Someone else's inner life contains countries you haven't visited. You respect the borders.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 12). In your Year of Constant Spring, regardless of the season, your emotional weather is most often comfortable, inviting hope, growth, youthful excitement and favorable conditions for movement. Love and hope are always in the air. More highlights: envelopes of money, the exact right social situation for your goals, and the sweet affection of friends and admirers. Pisces and Virgo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 5, 26, 3, 27 and 17.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Hugh Jackman continues to surprise audiences, following "Song Sung Blue" with the darker "The Death of Robin Hood," which recently premiered at the Sydney Film Festival. Whether singing, dancing, or taking on dramatic roles, Jackman rarely stands still as an artist. His Sun, Mercury, and Uranus in Libra reflect a lifelong devotion to beauty, balance, and creative reinvention, while his fair-trade coffee company, Laughing Man, speaks to Libra's enduring concern for justice.
