New on DVD: Harness the power of Grayskull with 'Masters of the Universe'
Published in Entertainment News
The revival of an over-the-top '80s cartoon character tops the DVD releases for the week of Oct. 20.
"Masters of the Universe": This reboot boasting bigger spectacle and more self-awareness stars Nicholas Galitzine as a goofy guy who discovers he is in fact the unwitting Prince Adam of Eternia.
"The most crucial element is the carefully calibrated tone, of light irony and deep reverence, which will appeal to Gen X and elder millennials, who have developed a nostalgic, yet winking appreciation for the material," writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. "Raunchy humor will sail over the heads of younger viewers, but the supporting cast, including Idris Elba, Kristen Wiig and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, are on the same page. One only wishes they might have pushed the camp factor further, as it feels a bit restrained at times. However, it’s Galitzine’s performance that will win you over — he’s truly got the power."

Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone directs.
