Akinola Davies Jr. dedicated his EE BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut to immigrant parents who sacrificed everything to give their children a better future.

The 40-year-old British-Nigerian filmmaker created the film My Father's Shadow - which follows two brothers exploring Lagos with their troubled dad during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis.

After he picked up the gong from Black Phone 2 star Ethan Hawke, 55, Davies Jr. - whose film explores themes of family, absence, and coming of age - gave a heartfelt acceptance speech.

Speaking live on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night (22.02.26), Davies Jr. thanked his family and brother Wale Davies for "nurturing the spark and writing this story".

Davies Jr. - who was joined on stage with Wale - added: "To all those whose parents migrated, your stories matter more than ever."

Before Davies Jr. - whose films beat The Ceremony, Pillion, A Want In Her, and Wasteman - said his words, Wale expressed his gratitude.

Wale said: "I'm gonna let my amazing brother and director acknowledge the amazing village we took to create this film.

"But first, I want to give thanks to God and to my father, Akinola David Sr. Thank you for the shadow you cast over our lives.|

After honouring his dad's guidance, Wale hopes to one day inspire others the way his father inspired him.

Wale continued: "Shadows are proof of light, and I hope one day we may cast the shadow that both intrigues and inspires our loved ones, and to the love of my life, my daughter, I love you."

Moments after Davies Jr. picked up the EE BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut, film producer Claire Binns - also the creative director of Picturehouse Cinemas - was recognised for her outstanding contribution to British cinema.

The special gong is one of BAFTA's highest awards, and it is presented to an individual who has made a significant impact and inspiring contribution to film.

For over 40 years, Claire has championed diverse and independent work on big screens around the UK.

She has also shown off filmmakers, including Danny Boyle, 69, Francis Lee, 57, and 56 year old Steve McQueen.
