'The Pitt' has been renewed by HBO for a third season

PITTSBURGH — One day ahead of the streaming premiere of “The Pitt” Season 2 on Thursday night, fans learned this season won’t be the last for the Pittsburgh-based medical drama.
HBO has renewed the show for Season 3, according to a Variety article citing HBO CEO Casey Bloys’ announcement during the Wednesday premiere of the show’s second season at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles.
The HBO Max series, created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by Carnegie Mellon University alum John Wells, tells the stories of emergency healthcare workers in a fictional hospital called the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center that takes its inspiration from the North Side’s Allegheny General Hospital.
“The Pitt” focuses on hyperrealism to authentically represent the lives of emergency department employees, including the struggles and emotional toll they face daily.
“The show is meant to be a little raw and to have mistakes in the way in which it’s shot,” said Wells in a December interview with the Post-Gazette. “It’s intentionally shot with errors to try and mimic the kind of chaotic feeling that [emergency departments] often have.”
The show’s first season took home three Emmys at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in September. During his acceptance speech for the award for best actor, Noah Wyle, who leads the show as main character Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, dedicated the recognition to the medical community.
“To anybody who’s going on shift tonight, or coming off shift tonight, this is for you,” he said.
The team behind the show works closely with medical professionals and leaders at Allegheny General, especially when utillizing the location to film outdoor and rooftop scenes.
As a thank you, the streaming company sent AGH workers coffee and pastries on Tuesday via a truck parked outside of the hospital’s emergency department.
Starring in the show alongside Wyle are Katherine LaNasa, Shawn Hatosy, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell and Shabana Azeez. Sepideh Moafi joined the cast in Season 2 as a new attending physician named Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi.
Information about casting for Season 3 has not yet been revealed.
