Nick Reiner won't face death penalty for parents' death

Prosecutors won’t seek the death penalty in the murder trial of Nick Reiner when it gets underway next year.

The 33-year-old son of Emmy Award-winning performer Rob Reiner and his photographer wife, Michele Singer Reiner, is charged with fatally stabbing the show business royals in the couple’s Los Angeles home on Dec. 14. He pleaded not guilty and has a pretrial hearing Tuesday in California.

He will not face the prospect of execution, the Los Angeles County District Attorney told the Daily News by email.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman later said in a Tuesday press conference that several factors played into that decision.

Hochman added that the victims’ surviving children, Jake and Romy Reiner, asked that gory evidence against their brother not be made public due to the “additional trauma and harm” it will cause them personally. That decision is being left up to the court.

“Nobody really understands what it’s like to go through something like that until you’re living it,” Jake told ABC News in an interview last month.

Even if the death penalty were pursued, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2019 order to halt executions in California could complicate the state’s ability to implement such punishment.The District Attorney’s office said that the case isn’t expected to get underway before the end of the year.

Rob and Michele were mourned by their entertainment industry peers Monday night at the 78th Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

“We all miss Rob and Michele,” an emotional Jamie Lee Curtis said at the end of the show’s in memoriam tribute.
