NY Sen. Chuck Schumer briefly treated at DC hospital for dehydration
Published in News & Features
Sen. Chuck Schumer was briefly treated for dehydration Wednesday at a Washington, D.C., hospital after he felt lightheaded while working out on a stationary bike at the Capitol gym.
The 74-year-old Democratic minority leader from Brooklyn returned to Capitol Hill and was back at work after getting a clean bill of health from doctors.
“Out of an abundance of caution, (Schumer) went to the hospital to be treated for dehydration,” said Angelo Roefaro, a Schumer spokesman. “He is now back at work.”
Schumer blamed the record-setting heat wave that has blanketed the Northeast since the start of the week.
“He wants to remind everyone to drink some water and stay out of the heat,” Roefaro added.
Heat alerts are still in effect for cities along the Northeast corridor, although temperatures are expected to drop significantly by Thursday.
The Democratic leader has mostly been a spectator on Capitol Hill in recent weeks as Republicans seek to jam President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill of tax and spending cuts through the chamber on a party line vote.
Schumer earlier spoke to presumptive Democratic New York mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani to congratulate him on winning the primary over ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and arrange to meet soon in Brooklyn.
“He ran an impressive campaign that connected with New Yorkers,” Schumer tweeted, without offering a formal endorsement of the progressive assemblyman.
