PLEASANTON, California — The overall pace of Bay Area tech industry layoffs has slowed in recent months, even though software company Workday has just revealed a fresh round of local job cuts.

Workday intends to eliminate 142 jobs at its corporate headquarters in Pleasanton, the cloud-based software services company reported to the state Employment Development Department.

The Workday cutbacks represent the latest in a series of layoffs that the software company has initiated in its Pleasanton home territory.

The new layoffs are scheduled to take place on November 30, Workday reported to the state EDD. The job cuts are expected to be permanent.

So far this year, Workday has eliminated 296 jobs, a review of the company’s WARN filings shows. A prior round of Workday layoffs in 2026 occurred on April 6 with the elimination of 154 jobs at that time.

Last year, Workday filed a WARN notice that signaled it was cutting 617 jobs in Pleasanton. Those layoffs took effect in April 2025.

Overall, however, the pace of Bay Area job cuts disclosed by tech companies slowed markedly in the July-through-September third quarter of this year, this news organization’s compilation of state filings shows.

During the third quarter, tech companies revealed decisions to eliminate 3,043 Bay Area jobs, according to the combined totals from dozens of WARN notices.

That was fewer than half of the 7,962 tech industry staffing reductions in the Bay Area that were revealed in the April-through-June second quarter of 2026.

The third-quarter layoff totals were roughly the same as the 3,029 job cuts that tech companies reported for this year’s January-through-March first quarter.

Despite these hopeful recent signs, tech industry layoffs so far in 2026 have already topped the total for all of 2025, a review of last year’s and this year’s WARN notices shows.

During the first nine months of this year, tech companies reported decisions to slash just over 14,000 jobs in the Bay Area. That was 38% more than the 10,170 tech industry Bay Area job cuts in 2025.
